International Week 2010 will celebrate the rich, cultural diversity of our school, Monday, Mar 22, through Friday, March 26. The week features a global themed student fair with passports and interactive fun, performances and international food, dance, art, music, and fashion.
WHY? To fight against intolerance, build compassion and understanding, to work against stereotypes, to integrate the arts, recognize the hard world of classroom teachers, and to forge connections among the different grade levels of the school for both the students and faculty Our first school wide celebration was three years ago and we are very excited to do it again! All events are open to the community. We welcome help from parents in organizing and staffing this event.
We cannot do it without you.
Each grade will be part of a performance/global village experience. They will tour the transformed multipurpose room with a passport; taste new foods and learn about their international neighbors through arts and culture. There will be ongoing events in the classrooms and throughout the week to build up to the Global Village Tour.
The subcommittees for the event would include:
- Performances of multi-cultural drama, dance, storytelling, and music, (we need stage hand help as well as performers) and we need a committee chair!
- Guest speakers who have lived abroad or work in the global community (ten minute speakers, for each of 6 performances) and we need a committee chair!
- International food sampling –we need cooks and donations and we need a committee chair(s)!
- Grade level table displays- displays of art, music, architecture to help fill the grade level table displays (work with classroom teachers and grade parents)
- International vendors and we need a committee chair!
- Global Fashions for Faculty to wear during the week. and we need a committee chair!
- Quote for the Day-we want to do the announcements in different languages. Can you translate, “Good morning students. Are you ready to learn today”?
- And new committees for the innovative ideas you may offer!
We are in full planning mode now, and are looking forward to hearing from you ASAP, if you can help in any way. If you are interested in helping please let me know. My email is cgrizzard@bcps.k12.md.us, or leave me a message in my mailbox (Clare Grizzard) if you have questions.
OUR FIRST MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE LIBRARY ON TUESDAY, FEB 2TH RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL.
These are the kinds of experiences that make us worthy of the Young Audiences Visionary School of Maryland Award 2010 and the Kennedy Center State Award 2009!
Thanks for your support,
